The German-British Association of Würzburg mourns the death of

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

During the course of her seventy-year reign, the Queen visited Germany seven times. As a member of a generation whose lives had been shaped by two world wars, and as someone who had herself played an active part in the war effort during the Second World War, it was of no small significance when the Queen offered an outstretched hand of reconciliation to the German people on the occasion of her first visit in 1962. In the following decades, she returned many times, upholding that first pledge to promote friendship and cooperation, especially at the turning points of history, such as German reunification, the world financial crisis and the Brexit referendum. Thus, in her quietly dignified and persistent way, the Queen made a significant and continuous contribution to fostering peace and understanding between our two nations.

Indeed, the fact that the very last state visit undertaken by the 89-year-old monarch was to Germany highlights the special place Anglo-German relations held for the Queen.

Our association, whose declared aim it is to foster the cultural and personal ties between the United Kingdom and Germany, mourns the loss of this outstanding figurehead of intercultural exchange and rapprochement. Moreover, to many of our British members living in Würzburg and Lower Franconia, the Queen served as a focal point, a human face representing their native country in their daily lives abroad. Because of all this, and maybe also because of Her Majesty’s own German family connections, Elizabeth II will always be remembered by our members as “Our Queen”. She will be sorely missed and revered for many times to come.
